1. The Eleventh Hour (Series 5)
The annual return of Doctor Who is always guaranteed to spark a fevered foray of excitement and anticipation and this reached new levels of fever pitch back in 2010 with the anticipated arrival of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. Oh, and Karen Gillan was stepping aboard as his new companion, Amy Pond, and the show had undergone a complete behind the scenes overhaul with the inception of Steven Moffat as its new showrunner. To say that it was suddenly unrecognisable would be the understatement of the century as the BBC's flagship franchise prepared to relaunch itself following the departure of the ever popular David Tennant. It quite literally could've gone one way or the other. Thankfully, it all paid off - and then some - as The Eleventh Hour was met with a tidal wave of critical and fan acclaim. With a new dynamic duo, revamped opening titles and a brand new TARDIS interior to boot, Doctor Who entered a shining new era and Matt's debut escapade affirmed that his role as the Time Lord was one he was born to play. The episode itself is one of Steven Moffat's finest, in the "fly on the seat of your pants" sort of way. Despite having about 1,000 things to get through, it maintains a steady pace with an exhilarating story which effortlessly establishes various story strands that would be developed and dissected throughout the remainder of the Eleventh Doctor's era. And for those reasons, it's the greatest series premiere to date. Fish fingers and custard, anyone? What did you think of our list?
