Ranking The John Lewis Christmas Adverts

2. The Bear And The Hare (2013)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqWig2WARb0 In 2013, John Lewis took a different approach to the creation of their Christmas advert, opting not to use human actors to convey a poignant short story, but animated ones instead. Focusing on a bear and a hare (it would've been a real dampener if the story had been true to nature and the former had eaten the latte), the advert introduces us to a jackrabbit excited about the holiday, but disappointed about not being able to share it with his grizzly friend as a result of his need for hibernation. Through the act of gift-giving, however, the hare is able to convince the bear to join him and the other woodland critters to share in the 'magic' of the holiday, reducing grown men and women to tears in the process. This advert was the one that made the series prey not only on the emotions of its viewers, but also directly on their wallets through the creation of merchandise, which quickly sold out across the country and resulted in the company following a similar formula with Monty The Penguin this year.
