Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Red Dwarf III

Red Dwarf
BBC

Series three was the high-point of Red Dwarf. Grant and Naylor were now in full control of the show's production. This meant that out went the drab looking sets of the first two series, and in came a much more exciting and colourful look to the show. This was the Dwarf style that we would come to associate with the show. And with Kryten becoming a full member of the crew, we now had the core Dwarfer team.

None of these changes would've mattered though if the episodes hadn't delivered. And they did, in spades. Character development excelled this series, with the Lister/Rimmer dynamic explored in great depth in the classic bottle episode of 'Marooned'. And 'The Last Day' went even further, by introducing alien concepts such as life and death into Kryten's weirdly-shaped head.

Sci-fi elements would blossom too (along with the budgets) in the inventive 'Backwards','Bodyswap' and the introduction of the shape-shifting, emotion-sucking creature of 'Polymorph'. And we'd get glimpses of how things might've been if only Rimmer had invented the Tension Sheet in 'Timeslides'. A tragic what-if episode, if you equate success with large pots of money. Which of course, Rimmer does.

Red Dwarf III was a leap for the show that was now fully heading into hyper-drive. It was the moment when Red Dwarf became not just a show you liked, but a show you loved.
