Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
7. Red Dwarf VII
With no studio audience and higher production values, series seven was derided as being the end of Red Dwarf. The moment when the show jumped the shark, and abandoned the cheapness and charm that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
What made things worse for this series was that co-creator from day one, Rob Grant, was no longer on board. With the writing partnership of Grant and Naylor broken, new blood was brought into the writer's room and this was not immediately successful. The series also suffered from Chris Barrie's departure from the show, who left to star in new god-awful football sitcom, A Prince Among Men (good move, Chris, good move).
But despite the flaws and missteps, series seven is not the dud everyone remembers it to be. There's some excellent character pieces to be found here; Lister's realisation of his paradoxical existence, Rimmer's rebirth as a hero, and Kryten's unfortunate discovery about his own creation.
This was a series all about redemption and perhaps then, it's now time it was redeemed in the eyes of some of its critics.
