Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Red Dwarf VI

Red Dwarf

Series six is a pure game of two halves. You can split the series right down the middle, with one half proving a tasty treat and the other half you're better off spitting out.

Let's get the bad stuff out the way first. So, 'Psirens', 'Emohawk' and 'Rimmerworld' aren't terrible. But they're all average at best. They're passable attempts at making a standard episode of Red Dwarf, each feeling like lazy rehashes of concepts and ideas that were done much better in previous series. They fail to offer anything new, and ultimately, they fall a bit flat in comparison.

However, 'Leigon', 'Out Of Time' and 'Gunmen Of The Apocalypse', stand out. All of them are witty takes on well-horned sci-fi concepts. 'Gunmen...' would take this to the next level though. It was an episode that gained international acclaim for its clever concept. It had some brilliant comedic acting (Chris Barrie, in particular, kills it as "Dangerous" Dan McGraw), and an engaging, sometimes touching, story. It's rightly up there as one of the best Red Dwarf episodes in the show's history.
