Morty is one of the smartest characters in the show without even knowing it. There are many adventures where it is actually Morty who comes up with the necessary solution to make it out alive.

However, due to always being told that he is stupid by everyone else in the family we see that Morty constantly doubts himself. This is made even more prominent in the episode Something Ricked This Way Comes where he refers to himself as an idiot.

Everyone has something that they are selfconscious about especially when other people bring us down. Knowing that Morty deals with that as well helps the show feel grounded.
