Rick And Morty: 5 Reasons Rick Sanchez Is A Dark Reflection Of The Doctor

1. Emotional Detachment

The Doctor

When the Daleks compliment the Doctor's bloodlust; when Lady Me assumes the Doctor is part of the universe ending 'Hybrid'; or when The Silence start a literal holy war to destroy him as the greatest threat to existence, it's easy to write it off bad guys being bad guys.

But then the Doctor decides to kill a brood of newborn spider people, leaves a small child called Davros on a battlefield, and votes to lobotomise the last star whale (the fact that each decision is reversed soon after is beside the point) and we are left wondering if that altruism is just a mask.

Rick Sanchez

Rick is casually cruel and hurtful to the people around him, but when the chips are down (or he is really drunk) he reveals an unexpectedly emotional attachment to the members of his family.

Early in the show Rick announces his new catchphrase 'wubba lubba dub dub', thought to be a nonsense exclamation. At the end of season 2 Bird Person translates it to a phrase in his own language as "I am in great pain, please help me!"

Rick's time in alternate dimensions has warped his morality and view on 'normal' human society. This is shown by how casually he talks about the infinite members of his family and how easy they are to replace.

Makes you wonder if he has ever abandoned dimensions before.

Common Traits

Basically due to the four previous points, both Rick and The Doctor have trouble with traditional morality and emotional attachments.

The fact is that the Doctor (as a general rule) doesn't go back and visit past companions, and Rick has no loyalty to any version of his family beyond the one in his current universe. His original daughter and granddaughter are alive in his original dimension (which he ruined) and he has never gone back to check on them.

Both the Doctor and Rick ran away from their homes, returned sporadically, eventually destroyed it, and are currently messing around in space without a care in the world.
