Rick & Morty: 10 Essential Episodes EVERY Fan Should See

8. Total Rickall

On the surface this may be the utmost Rick and Mortiest episode of them all. It contains all the staples of the series, a heavy emphasis on theoretical scientific exploration, an amalgamation of pop culture references like no other and an unprecedentedly dark ending that hits you like a ton of bricks.

This becomes more effective because of the light-hearted shenanigans that occur throughout the events that precede it.

Just like a plethora of other entries in the Rick and Morty canon, Total Rickall's title is a pun on a well-known Hollywood blockbuster (which makes it all the more surprising that the Austrian behemoth himself doesn't appear). That said though, it is bustling with alien life-forms disguised as some of the most imaginative and colourful characters this side of vividity.

One thing that goes amiss more times than not, is the way the writers play a trick on the trope of chessy flashback episodes - of which most sitcoms are littered with - that go nowhere or explain things we either don't care about or know already.

Total Rickall is an episode that just says "f*ck it", throwing everything at the wall and resulting in an inocuously tantalising manner that entails the adhesion of it all being much stronger than one would expect.
