Ricky Gervais: 10 Best TV Moments

7. The Water Bottle - Extras

As Andy Millman tells the comedy team at the BBC, the best things in art are auteured ("Ha... turd.") This is true of Gervais's and Merchant's work as much as Millman's; they star in and direct each of their sitcoms, but most importantly, they write them. So often in their work it's the writing that shines through, which makes this moment in Extras all the more special. Because unlike much of Gervais's work, it's pure slapstick. He sees his former schoolmate casually open a bottle of water and chat up a girl, and so he decides he can do the same. He goes over, coolly tossing a bottle of water, and as he opens it, he realises that it's sparkling; he puts his mouth over the bottle to stop it going everywhere, as everyone looks on in embarrassment. It's the modern-day equivalent to Del Boy falling through the bar; a truly hilarious comedy moment and a massively unexpected one.
