Ricky Gervais: 10 Best TV Moments

8. Bad News And Irrelevant News - The Office

There's trouble at Wernham Hogg. David Brent has promised that jobs will be safe, but when the final episode of the first series comes around, it turns out that he's lied. There are going to be cuts. David steps out of his office after the meeting with Jennifer to tell his team that there's good news and bad news. Delivering the bad news first, he tells them that they're going to lose their jobs. To soften the blow, he explains that he's been promoted. "You're still thinking about the bad news, aren't you?" he asks the bewildered office workers, as Malcolm claims the good news is irrelevant. "That's not a phrase though, is it?" justifies Brent. It's typical David Brent, a classic mishap of him believing he's more important than he actually is. It's just as well he realised just in time, that the team don't particularly care what percentage of the board's backing he has, either.
