Schitt's Creek: 10 Best Standalone Episodes

9. The Cabin - S1E5

Schitt's Creek
CBC

It's important to remember that, while the show's main characters are the Roses, it is as much about the rest of the residents of its namesake town of Schitt's Creek. Without the cocoon of Jocelyn's patience, Roland's generosity, Ray's can-do attitude, or even Bob's overwhelming niceness, it's unlikely that the once-millionaire family would have been able to get through their monumental misfortune.

The Cabin is a masterclass in small town kindness; Moira and Johnny are offered an overnight stay in Roland's holiday cabin to get some - ahem - privacy after a faulty lock gives David an eyeful of his parents' relationship. The cold open might go down as one of the show's best: you're never too old to be permanently scarred by such an image.

Yet it's really the townspeople that make The Cabin such an enjoyable spectacle. From Roland's convoluted and unhelpfully vague directions leading to the inevitable wrong-cabin scenario, or Bob and Gwen's misplaced kindheartedness when it comes to finding two potential strangers doing the nasty in their own bed, it shows the audience just how out of place the Rose family is in this close-knit community who will do anything for each other... Even if it means an impromptu load of sweaty bed sheets to launder.
