Scrubs: 10 Best Characters In Just One Episode

8. Dr. Townsend

Matthew Perry Scrubs
NBC

Over the years, Scrubs was home to some simply huge guest stars, some of which will feature later on in this list. Arguably one of the biggest names to join these ranks was Dick Van Dyke, who brought to life Dr. Townsend in season two.

Despite being best friends with Dr. Kelso, who at the time was the most hated character on the show, Dr. Townsend was loved by everyone. He sang with the Worthless Peons, Dr. Cox loved and respected him, and even the Janitor looked out for JD just because Townsend asked him to.

However, behind his contagious smile and jolly façade, he represented an aging doctor unable to keep up with the cutting edge pace required in modern medicine. He thought that because he was so close with Kelso he could get away with it, as he simply didn't have the energy any more, but when a patient was hurt because of his outdated procedure, actions had to be taken.

Dr. Townsend was a breath of fresh air for the short time he graced the halls of Sacred Heart, while his firing ultimately led to the first real emotion shown by Dr. Kelso in the series.
