2. Dr. Cox's Breakdown

Jill Tracey's death was a tragedy, however there was the silver lining that she was able to donate her organs to save the lives of three other patients throughout Sacred Heart. Yet, while JD was absolved of any guilt when her tests came back as positive for rabies rather than suicide, it meant crisis for Dr. Cox.

When Jill died, there were three patients waiting for organ transplants. Mrs. Sykes needed a new liver, Mr. Dennison needed a new heart valve, and Dave needed a kidney. Dr. Cox was obsessed with getting the organs to these patients, as he had to be, but didn't stop to consider rabies.

All three became infected. The first to die was Mrs. Sykes, quickly followed by Mr. Dennison. JD was about to turn Dr. Cox out of his spiral when Dave started coding too. It was one thing to lose the first two patients, as Cox had no choice but to give them the organs, but Dave could have waited another month for a kidney, and it was Dr. Cox' eagerness that ultimately killed him.

Until now, with a few rare exceptions, Dr. Cox was very good at keeping his emotions in check, and yet, with this third death now on his conscience, he hit rock bottom hard. To the backing of 'How to Save a Life' by The Fray, this was one of the most emotionally charged scenes in the entire show, as it truly hit home how devastating one wrong decision in a hospital can be, no matter how good the intentions.
