Secret Invasion Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs
2. Up - A Different Nick Fury
As much as fans love their favourite haracters in the MCU, it would be boring to see exactly the same iterations with every appearance. Even the likes of Tony Stark, one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise, had to change and evolve as time went on.
For Nick Fury, Secret Invasion is his first real appearance since Spider-Man: Far From Home (not counting What If…?). Previously, he had always faced every threat head-on with the classic Samuel L. Jackson badass attitude. In the space of one week, his life was rocked by the Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark, and Thor, and he just took it in his stride.
Even when he was seen upon S.A.B.E.R at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, he seemed in relatively good spirits bouncing around the shuttle. However, when he came back to Earth he was different. Not only is he older, he is carrying a lot of baggage from his previous fights, and is almost suffering from PTSD from being snapped away.
This makes for a far more complex and deeper character. Fury has almost been cast as an underdog for the fight against the Skrulls, and who doesn’t love an underdog?
