Secret Invasion Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Up - Who Can You Trust?

The appeal of the Secret Invasion premise is relatively simple, even before knowing the details of the actual story. With shapeshifting aliens about, how do you know who to trust? You can’t, and the opening episode leaned on this immediately.

Everett Ross was killed in the opening minutes of Secret Invasion and was revealed to be a Skrull. Martin Freeman’s character has been in the MCU for seven years at this point, so has he been a Skrull all along? If not, when was he infiltrated, and what happened to the real Ross?

Of course, this likely won’t be the only major Skrull reveal in the show, with the audience already being shown they don’t know who to trust. When Maria Hill was first shot by Gravik in fury’s form, it was impossible to tell which was a Skrull. There was a second where Hill could have been the alien, but the audience was utterly clueless.

So, who else is a Skrull? It’s a tiny detail but Sonya seemingly forgot Fury’s drink of choice. Carelessness on the part of a Skrull? A misdirect from Fury to test his old friend? Or a misdirect from Marvel just to keep audiences guessing? Who knows, but either way it was effective.
