Secret Invasion Episode 2 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

7. Up - Gravik's Motivation

Nick Fury Secret Invasion
Marvel Studios

It's a tale as old as time that a story is only as good as its villain, and Marvel Studios have only been too guilty over the years of neglecting their antagonists. Sure, there have been the likes of Thanos, Loki, Killmonger, and more that have been genuinely compelling, but at the other end of that spectrum lies Ronan the Accuser, Whiplash, and Kro.

It is imperative that Gravik fall much closer to the former to the latter, and in fairness, with Kingsley Ben-Adir, there is every chance that he will. The new Skrull General wasn't featured too much in the first episode, outside of outlining his character and that shocking final scene, but he had a much juicier role in episode two.

Gravik watched as Nick Fury gave a speech that Captain America would have been proud of, essentially resulting in the Skrulls working for him while he and Captain Marvel searched for a New Skrullos. He promised that if the Skrulls kept their word, he would keep his. Well, they did, and he didn't.

Fury left the Skrulls, and Earth altogether, and you can't blame Gravik for feeling abandoned. Sure, bombings and assassinations aren't the way to go about things, but his taking over the Earth isn't just some mad scramble for power. There is a real reason behind it.
