Sherlock: 10 Best Minor Characters
8. James Sholto
As can be expected from the legendary detective, mysteries always seem to follow him, and he can't even take a day off to enjoy his best friends wedding. The episode "The Sign of Three" was a lot of fun, not only because viewers got to see Watson tie the knot, but because of the introduction of his old commander and friends James Sholto.
This character was described as elusive and introverted, which was clear from his delicate and quiet demeanour. Sholto had been a commander in Afghanistan and accidentally led a group of fresh recruits into an ambush, resulting in their deaths and his disfigurement.
The horror of this event not only damaged his body but his psyche too, as the families of the deceased brought shame upon him, and one even tried to kill him in the events of the episode.
This character played into some fascinating ideas about being a disgraced military hero who has to survive the guilt of their mistakes and the hateful eyes of those affected by their tragic past. It made the whole case incredibly believable, as you could see why someone would seek to harm him and understand why he'd consider giving up.
