Sherlock: 10 Crazy Twists That Would Turn The Show Upside Down

4. Sherlock Spent His Two Years Away High

Just as Steve Thompson had convinced us Sherlock Holmes was a loveable, childlike, vulnerable and hilarious man who just wants to be a hero, Steven Moffat smashed the illusion by turning him into a conniving murderer. Oh, and he's a heroin addict now: heroin addicts are cool. The clues to his drug-riddled past have always been there, but what if Sherlock was away for so long because he'd relapsed into his former lifestyle? Maybe Mycroft brought him home because he realised what was going on; we never actually saw him fight bad guys abroad either. It would not only explain why Moriarty's back - he wasn't dismantling his network at all - but it would allude to something Holmes himself mentioned: he solves cases as a substitute for drugs. He wasn't solving cases when he was away: he was tracking down terrorists. That's a bit of a nitpick, and though it's intriguing to wonder how often Sherlock turns to the drugs, and whether he'd do so when living on his own, heroin probably isn't the sole reason that he spent two years away. We heard some of the tales of him solving cases anyway, as Anderson was convinced that this he was still alive; it seems Sherlock chose life after all.
