Sherlock: 10 Crazy Twists That Would Turn The Show Upside Down
3. Moriarty Is The Third Holmes Brother
It was a throwaway line to many, but one that many Sherlock fans picked up on, in 'His Last Vow'. A member of the government asked Mycroft if he was sparing his brother's life for sentiment, only for Mycroft to reference the "other" one. Other brother? We know that the Holmes boys weren't too kind to Moriarty. And we know that he's the only other person in this whole universe that could be as clever as those two. Remember when Jim was taunting Sherlock about all the people that would miss him if he died? He said "Mummy and Daddy": not "Your mummy and daddy", but as if they were his parents too. Could you really blame them for putting that psychopath up for adoption? It's too obvious a route to go down, surely; it's the same conundrum that Doctor Who writers found themselves in over the Master, and that ended when the Doctor claimed, "You've been watching too many films." Rather like Mycroft and Sherlock not being related, or Janine being related to Jim, it's far too convenient a link to draw, simply to snatch some kind of affection from the audience that these characters have some kind of bond. Or as it's also known, Princess Leia Syndrome.
