At first, although it felt alien, the relationship seemed healthy. Janine brought out a side to Sherlock that viewers hadn't seen before, and it seemed to be changing him. But then, it was revealed that the entire relationship was a ploy from Sherlock to use Janine's position as Charles Magnussen's personal assistant to gain access to his office.

Viewers had seen Sherlock use people before, but to trick someone into believing you love them, gaslighting them and even going so far as to fake a proposal to them was next level sociopathy.

It's a wonder that he still made it out of this without enduring more immense consequences, as Janine's revenge - selling their story to newspapers - was sweet, but nothing too damning.
