Sherlock Series 4: 10 Things You Need To Know

5. It's Much Darker

Some fans criticised Series Three for being a lot lighter than previous runs. As if to counteract that, Series Four is said to be the darkest year of the show yet. Here's what Moffat has to say on the subject:

“It’s [about] consequences. Chickens come to roost. It’s dark in some ways—obviously it’s great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that—but there’s a sense of… things… coming back to bite you…It’s going to be more of an emotional upheaval. It will be tough at times. Maybe that’s the word? A tougher series.”

This new tone is clearly demonstrated in the trailer, which shows the main characters on edge and falling out with each other left, right and centre. Molly is shouting at Sherlock, John is standing over a hospital bed (Mary’s?) and even kindly Mrs Hudson is calling Mycroft a reptile. Bit much, Mrs H.
