Sherlock Series 4: 10 Things You Need To Know

6. Toby Jones Is The Nastiest Villain Yet

Sherlock Dog Moriarty

Sherlock has always served up brilliant villains – with Moriarty owning Series One and Two and Magnussen lingering in the background of Series Three. Now, Series Four will give Holmes a new nemesis to face – Dr Culverton Smith, as played by Toby Jones (Captain America, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games). As glimpsed in the trailers, he is a grinning, giggling sort of villain with really terrible teeth. And, according to co-creator Steven Moffat, he’s the most evil antagonist yet:

“[Jones] is the darkest villain we’ve had. This guy is the purest evil. Sherlock is actually appalled by him. He’s the most evil villain we’ve had. I don’t think that when you see it, you will disagree. He’s horrific.”

From what we know, Jones will only appear in episode two The Lying Detective. In the original story, Smith is an expert poisoner – with Holmes himself seemingly falling prey to him. Will Smith succeed where Moriarty and Magnussen failed and kill Sherlock Holmes? We'll have to wait until January (or read a 100 year old short story) to find out.
