Sherlock Showdown: Benedict Cumberbatch Vs. Robert Downey Jr.
2. The Reactions To Mary
What many of us were waiting to see in the series that just aired was how Sherlock would react to John dating and marrying Mary Morstan. Many people who were expecting a bad reaction from Sherlock were disappointed, the two seemed to get on as thick as thievesuntil Mary shot him of course. That would damper a normal friendship, but still did nothing to Sherlock and Mary. As close as ever. This was far from what people were expecting, and his reaction was far from what the book described. There was never a friendship that took place between Sherlock and John, and she certainly never acted as an intermediary. While no ones really complained about how far this particular feature strayed, its definitely a detail that Steven Moffat has ignored. But hey, we all love a good friendship. And season three of Sherlock was all about giving Sherlock friends. Being closer to the novels as a whole, the Downey Jr. Sherlock react in more of a way that we would expect from him. Resentful of John for leaving him, the lifestyle, the solving cases. Not understanding in the least why he would want to get married and be connected to someone, he is the furthest from supporting or even being friends with Mary. In fact, I would go so far to say as in Game of Shadows, when he throws Mary out the train cabin, shes lucky Mycroft is there to catch her. However, that was the sentiment that Sir Conan Doyle wanted. It wasnt supposed to be about whether or not they were in a romantic relationship, Sherlock did in fact have a dependence on John, which is shown in his dislike of Mary. In fact, one could argue that him disliking Mary would have made him more human than liking her for Johns sake. But sometimes change is good, and I enjoy a good Sherlock/Mary friendship, and with the dynamic being new and so loved by the fans, Ill give credit where credit is due... Best Reaction To Mary goes to: BBC Sherlock/Benedict Cumberbatch.
I'm currently attending my local college while trying to figure out who I am. I love Doctor Who, Sherlock, really any BBC show. I've also been told I'm a bit of a nerd. Specifically, a theatre nerd.
