The Simpsons: 10 Best Mr Burns Moments

4. Ketchup... Catsup - The Old Man And The Lisa

"I'm in way over my head!" In this episode from season 8, 'The Old Man and The Lisa', something unthinkable happens. Mr Burns loses his vast fortune. The writers had considered this story for some time as they were curious to see how Burns would interact with the outside world. There are plenty of gems to choose from in this episode, but it's the scene set in the supermarket that stands out as the clear winner here. After living with Smithers for a short time, Mr Burns ventures out grocery shopping to help his assistant out. Surprisingly, Burns actually manages to ride the bus independently, but struggles upon reaching the supermarket, failing to find his own brand of cereal (Burns-Os) and even trapping himself in a refrigerator. The worst thing though is when it's time to choose a sauce. First world problems eh? As Burns weighs up his options, the shop workers watch him switch between the two, unable to decide whether to buy ketchup or catsup. Believing Burns to be insane, the two grocers walk over and ask him to go with them so that they can commit the crazy old bastard to the nut house. Completely unaware of what's happening, Burns asks the workers if they're going to help solve his ketchup problem. Genius. As a child, I remember two important things from this moment. First, it was hilarious to finally see Burns as the old man he actually is and secondly, what the hell is catsup? To this day, I'm still confused, despite the power of the internet.
