Played: Malloy the Cat Burglar Episode: Homer The Vigilante After a number of treasured possessions begin disappearing from houses all over town, including Lisa's saxophone, Homer sets up a vigilante group to catch the cat burglar when the police prove wholly ineffective. Malloy then calls in to a TV interview between Kent Brockman and Homer, to advise him directly that his next crime will be to steal the world's largest cubic zirconia from the Springfield Museum. Homer and his gang stand guard outside the museum, but he is distracted by underage kids drinking beer and marches over to apprehend them. Malloy takes advantage of this lapse, and moves in to steal the diamond. After the town pelt Homer with fruit after realising he failed to protect it, Grampa offers a solution: he knows who the cat burglar is. Thanks to information obtained on one of his regular trips to the ground, he notices that Malloy wears sneakers - for sneaking. And he also has the world's largest cubic zirconia on his coffee table - a dead giveaway. After imprisoning Malloy and returning the townsfolk's possessions, Homer returns to gloat. Malloy cunningly suggests that all the millions of dollars he has stolen through the years are buried under a big 'T' (like the big 'W' in the film 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.') After digging their way down, Homer finds a letter from the cat burglar explaining politely that he has used the time they've spent looking for the money to escape, and apologises. Sam Neill's composed, refined tones lent themselves well to the charming Malloy, and it's very possible that many viewers wouldn't have recognised his voice first time around.
