3. Edna Tries To Seduce Mr Bergstrom Lisa's Substitute
When Mr Bergstrom shows his face at Springfield Elementary as a substitute for Miss Hoover, Lisa is soon smitten. However, I'm sure even someone as young as her would have been able to recognise Mrs Krabappel as a rival for any good-looking man's affections. Edna doesn't leave much to the imagination with this most seductive of pick-up lines
"Since he's been gone, I've been looking for a substitute to teach me a lesson I sorely need."
As hard as that must have been to turn down for any young substitute looking to make his name, his 'it's the children I love' reply would have been impossible for a latter-day Simpsons episode to resist twisting into something dirty-minded and crass. Fortunately this was still the golden age, both for the show and for Krabappel's double-entendres. The great thing about this scene, like many, is that she feels sexy enough to compete for the best men Bergstrom certainly ranks among them yet by coming on too strong she ends up alienating them from the get go. Edna's look of disappointment betrays the sheer desperation she feels, and in many ways she is a caricature for the most broken and jaded of women relying on their looks and their shock value to get by.
