The very first flashback episode the show ever produced, season two's The Way We Was shows how Homer and Marge got together in high school, and introduced the recurring character Artie Ziff (voiced by Jon Lovitz). Following an unsuccessful courtship by Homer in which he joins the debate team and pretends to be interested in French in order to get closer to her, Marge winds up rejecting him, and shows interest in Artie Ziff instead. However, after a disastrous prom date with Ziff, Marge winds up picking up a dejected Homer at the side of the road. They do fall in love in the end, and the rest is history. Ziff comes off as a creeper with busy hands, Homer comes off as genuinely in love, and the episode as a whole builds the groundwork for future flashbacks.
