The Simpsons: Ranking The Flashback Episodes

5. Homer's Barbershop Quartet

If there weren't so many good Simpsons episodes set in the past, then the story of the Be Sharps in season five would no doubt be a lock for best episode of its kind. Told in Homer's Barbershop Quartet it answers the question of why exactly Homer Simpson has an album (and a grammy), and at the time was probably one of the most unique Simpsons episodes ever. In it, Homer winds up as part of a successful barbershop quartet along with Principal Skinner, Apu, and Chief Wiggum. Once they hit it big, Wiggum is out of the band, and Barney winds up replacing him and becoming a John Lennon figure that further complicates what started as a simple love of music. Complete with his own Yoko Ono, he drives the band to the point of breakup, but not before viewers bear witness to one of the most original Simpsons episodes in the show's history along that way.
