The TNG VOY DS9 era will always be my comfort blanket. However for the series to survive as long as it has it needs to keep adapting to stay fresh. I think Kurtzman is doing a great job of doing that while still respecting the core beliefs that Star Trek represents

As Kirk says in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, 'Now now Mr. Scott, young minds, fresh ideas, be tolerant!'

There was a prescience in these words, reflected in the comment above. Star Trek means a certain thing to many different people, something that is individual and unique to each person. However, that does not mean that it is a one-size-fits-all, interpret-as-you-like endeavor. From the earliest days of the franchise, it was trying to challenge and to change.

People drew parrallels between the Original Series and the Dominion War, which many said Roddenberry would have hated - although later producers said that Gene would have loved to have had the budget and technology to make some of those larger fleet shots.

There will always be a bit of a jarring time when different depictions of an old idea are shown - this writer struggled with Enterprise on first watch, and loves it now.
