Sons Of Anarchy: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

5. Season Six

Sons Of Anarchy
FX

By the time season six rolled around, there were a few characters whose time should have been called long ago. Namely, yes, Clay Morrow, who by this point had stuck around for a lot longer than most people were expecting. Clay's death at the hands of Jax is absolutely the most satisfying and well-done moment of the season, and it is with the former SAMCRO President's death that Jax's story enters its final act.

On top of Clay's welcome demise, Tara too meets her maker at the hands of an unhinged Gemma, who repeatedly stabs her in the back of the head. Though the death itself is gratuitous and harsh, it doesn't take away from the emotional devastation that comes with Jax finding her body.

Outside of these grand, game-changing developments, season six is let down by the same thing that hurts the final season so much - an over-reliance on brutal, emotionless and pointless scenes of violence, perhaps best seen in the prison visiting room when Gemma is forced to have sex with Clay by the guards. There's no need for it, no pay-off and little regard for development or meaning.

It has solid moments in its final stretch, but ultimately feels like Sutter was trying to be as cruel as possible, knowing the show was nearing its end and this might be the last chance for him to go all-out.
