Sons Of Anarchy: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

4. Season One

Sons Of Anarchy
FX

The season that started it all is, to this day, a great example of how all shows should start their run. Brimming with potential right from the get-go, season one introduced fans to the likes of Jax, Clay, Gemma, Chibs, Tig, Bobby and Opie, and made the impossible possible by making each one of these morally grey criminals endearing and easy to root for.

The performances are all fantastic, the characters all well-established, and the hook - that of Jax wondering if this is the life for him - creates relentless and menacing tension throughout.

This was the season that killed Opie's wife Donna without remorse, where Jax began to question his allegiances and the tragedies that were still to come were set in motion. With its unwavering themes of family, brotherhood, loyalty and friendship, SoA's first season set it up to be the next big thing on TV, full of sweeping action, complex (to say the least) characters and tight writing.

The season falls down in the rankings simply because it's the first season - it was still finding its footing, and had yet to reach the brilliance and compelling nature of the next few chapters.
