South Park: 10 Most Controversial Moments

7. Bleeding Mary

South Park Bleeding Mary
Comedy Central

Religion is always a slippery slope for any popular show to take on, which would explain why Matt Stone and Trey Parker never shied away from taking it on with the same twisted humor present throughout each episode. After all, you know it's a South Park episode when it involves a statue of the Virgin Mary menstruating.

Everyone in town starts receiving blessings by getting bled on by the statue, including Randy who tries to cure his alcoholism through Mary's holy blood. Needless to say, religious groups and organizations were not exactly fond of the episode's subject matter. Considering that the episode aired on the Eve of the Immaculate Conception (the part of the bible where Mary conceives Jesus), it makes sense why the Catholic organizations attacked the show.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights tried to get the episode completely removed from the Comedy Central schedule and from any DVD box sets, along with an apology they demanded Viacom give. Leading members of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops' Conference and the Council of Christians and Muslims also attempted a takedown of the episode, but to no avail. Crazy enough, this still was far from the worst Stone and Parker got from religious groups.
