South Park: 10 Most Controversial Moments
6. Scientology And Isaac Hayes
Oh, Isaac Hayes, you'd think after years of working on one of the crudest shows ever made, you'd be incapable of being offended. However, it seemed that Hayes was just as susceptible to South Park's comedy as any other group before him.
Although never specifically citing 'Trapped In The Closet' as the main factor behind his departure, the episode's critical view of Scientology made Hayes (a member of the Church of Scientology) upset. The actor was undecided on whether or not to leave the show, but felt he wasn't capable of making the final decision, letting his entourage decide his final departure.
Stone and Parker criticized Hayes heavily, stating the blatant double-standard of their consistent mockery of religion in previous seasons (with Hayes' participation), only for their Scientology episode to tip him over the edge. Chef's final episode 'The Return Of Chef' served as a conclusion for the character, as well as a response to the media who sensationalized Hayes's leaving.
