South Park: 10 Most Controversial Moments
3. Trapped In The Closet
While South Park was never exactly shy about teasing celebrities in the past, their teasing of Tom Cruise proved to be more of an issue than they likely expected. What starts out as an episode dedicated to poking fun at the rumors following Cruise and his sexuality became something bigger once Scientology got involved.
Stan joins Scientology and is believed to be L. Ron Hubbard, Tom Cruise (along with R. Kelly and John Travolta) coming in and out of the closet, resulting in plenty of controversy and an apparently very upset celebrity. While promoting Mission Impossible 3, Cruise supposedly stated he'd stop all promotions if the episode was shown again on the network. His publicist refuted anything about Cruise's involvement in the situation, but Comedy Central did in fact air the episode 'Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls' at the time 'Trapped in the Closet' was supposed to be rebroadcast.
CC stated the choice was meant to tribute Isaac Hayes (due to his departure from the show), but Stone and Parker believed otherwise. In the end, the episode got nominated for an Emmy and SP continued to poke fun at Tom Cruise, so it's clear that Stone and Parker won in the end.
