Butters is easily the best child character in the show, even though he isn't part of the big four. His climb from being a background character, to a small supporting, to finally a leading position proves how popular he is not only amongst fans but the creators themselves.

In a town as crude and offensive as South Park, Butters is the one child who doesn't seem to get it. His adorable innocence and naivety often get him into many problems, and ultimately makes him a perfect subject for manipulation. His constant dismissal and abuse gives him this endearing quality where you want to see him finally get the respect that he deserves.

Leopold "Butters" Stotch always finds the silver lining, no matter how much abuse gets thrown his way. This upbeat and optimistic attitude not only makes him incredibly funny but allows him to stand out thoroughly well amongst the general pessimism of the rest of the characters.
