Space Force Review: 5 Ups & 3 Downs
4. The Chimpstronaut
It’s been a long time since such an intense moment has graced our TV screens. The spacewalk in episode two seemed to have more twists than an M. Night Shyamalan film.
Episode one ends with the Chinese taking off the wings of Space Force’s new satellite, which if not fixed could derail the entire project by years. With a limited amount of time before the wings are too far away to be repaired, the team scramble to find a solution.
When a mysterious asset appears on radar, it is revealed the department had sent a dog and a chimpanzee into space for research purposes. The animal mission had been neglected for two weeks and it was doubtful the animals would even be alive. Luckily, the chimp had survived and had the job of repairing the satellite wings.
The suspense was agonising as with every success came another misstep. Unsurprisingly, the repair was a failure, but there were surprises elsewhere. As the chimpstronaut floated away towards the sun, it’s discovered that he had eaten the dog he was partnered with. Suddenly the mood changes and sadness turned to disgust. The chimp is welcomed aboard the Chinese spacecraft and leaves the door open for some primate espionage down the line.
