Star Trek: 10 Best Odo Episodes

7. The Alternate

Odo DS9
Paramount

The first episode to feature Dr. Mora Pol, the Bajoran scientist who first studied the Changeling as an 'unknown sample'. While on a quick jaunt through the Wormhole to uncover clues about other forms of shapeshifting life, Odo's feathers are ruffled due to Mora acting in a way that implies a close, fatherly bond between the two of them. The memories of his time being studied by Mora are not as endearing as Mora would have Dax believe.

On a volcanic planet that may hold some clues for them, recovery of a single specimen is interrupted by an eruption that knocks everyone but the shapeshifter out (since he doesn't have lungs). Odo decides the best course of action is to bring everyone back to DS9. When there, the recovered specimen goes missing and strange incidents start to occur. Dr. Bashir is attacked by a flying creature, which Mora suggests is not the specimen, but Odo.

Mora tries to convince the constable to accompany him back to Bajor, imploring that his new Starfleet friends won't understand him like Mora does. Odo flies into a shapechanging rage and flees again. Mora and Bashir then theorise that he was in some way affected by the volcanic gas released in the eruption and have to use Mora as a lure to pin him down and administer a cure. Mora realises that his treatment in the past of his project is not that of a father at all and Odo apologises to him. They have a great deal to try and work through in future.
