Star Trek: 10 Best Odo Episodes

3. The Ascent

Odo DS9
Paramount

The relationship between Odo and his swindling opposite Quark is one of the most touching in the series, with no episode focussing on it more than The Ascent. Set during the period when our shapeshifter cannot shape-shift, the constable has to continue his law-enforcement duties while unsure of himself.

The odd couple are heading to a jury hearing so that the Ferengi bar-owner can testify about the Orion Syndicate. Unfortunately for both of them, the Syndicate had placed an explosive device in their Runabout and they are downed onto a barely habitable and notably freezing planet. Quark figures that if they take the subspace transmitter from the crashed Runabout then they might stand a chance of carrying it high up enough to get a signal for help out.

What starts off as a hike for the two of them turns into a gruelling challenge of endurance. The two of them eventually boil over and it comes to blows, with Odo breaking his leg in a fall. Quark has to leave him behind in order to fulfil their mission and attempt to get home. While alone, Odo begins to record a message for whoever might find his body.

Fortunately, Quark did achieve his goal and they are rescued by the Defiant. While recovering, they assure each other than when they said they hated one another, they truly meant it.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
