Star Trek: 10 Character Fates Worse Than Death

1. Breaking The Warp 10 Speed Limit Only To Evolve Into A Giant Salamander

Because the crew of Voyager was stuck 70,000 light-years from the Alpha Quadrant, it didn't take long for them to whip up creative ways to get home. Tom Paris, being a pilot, figured the best way to accomplish the task was to find a way to make Voyager faster.

There is a long-standing "speed limit" in the Star Trek universe, which makes it impossible to pass into Warp 10. There's no way to do it, so people shouldn't even try. Paris didn't get that memo, so in "Threshold," he rigs up a shuttlecraft to do exactly that.

Not only does it work, but breaking the speed limit comes with the added bonus of speeding up his evolution at a rate millions of times faster than nature would normally allow. Instead of evolving into some sort of big-brained being who can read minds or whatever sci-fi thinks might happen, his evolution goes a different route.

After kidnapping Janeway and putting her through the experiment, both of them evolved into giant salamanders. So, no evolved humanoid; according to Star Trek, humanity will one day become salamanders. What's worse, while they were living it up as amphibians, they had some kids. The Doctor fixes up everything, deus ex machina-style, and it's never spoken of again.
