Star Trek: 10 Examples Of Incredibly Lazy Alien Makeup

9. The "Bajoran" - Ensign Ro, Deep Space Nine et al

Ro Laren

AKA the "Nose-Job". When we first saw it back in The Next Generation's Ensign Ro it was a little bit more with some extra ridgy pieces above the nose. As the series evolved the makeup simplified and more than likely it had something to do with a certain spin-off series called Deep Space Nine. On there the necessity to produce tons of the same alien race week in week out at a budget might have led to a more "streamlined" approach. The problem with the "Bajoran" is that it gets used so often and in multiple variations. Don't want to spend the time on a full makeup job because you've blown the guest cast budget or it's a big FX week? Bridge that nose and you're done in a minute. Examples are too numerous to list here and don't attempt a drinking game over spotting them. You'll be hospitalised. Ok, if you do want some more examples where they decided to plump for a cheap nose-job check out Joel Grey in Voyager's Resistance, Dean Stockwell in Detained from Enterprise or Musetta Vander in The Disease....Just a moment - it seems that this might get to be renamed the "Important Guest Actor" makeup job. If you want to ensure the audience still knows who your formerly famous guest star was, it's the best way to keep their identity out in the open...by a nose of course. A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
