Star Trek: 10 Examples Of Incredibly Lazy Alien Makeup

10. Telarites - Journey to Babel (The Original Series)

Journey To Babel 066

Easy choice for the first one and I just wanted to ease us into the terrible ten. Now it's universally accepted that this is one of the worst alien makeups produced but is it lazy? Well in the Original Series absolutely. You can just tell that it's a pig mask stuck on with a bit of tape to John Wheeler's face and it's a tad half-arsed by Fred B Phillips, the man responsible for the look of a certain Mr Spock no less. The thought is there but the result looks like they let him out of the trailer way too early - how is he able to see anything let alone smell? No wonder these guys were angry. Wheeler still manages to give a great performance and the makeup is especially emotive when one of the Tellarites winds up dead. This half-finished alien look was avoided for the best part of 40 years until Enterprise decided it was a good idea to remind us of that sloppy job. Fortunately Michael Westmore saved the day and created a better impression rather than nipping down to Partyland for a bargain bag and two bags of Play-doh - and he gave them eyes and a much more alien visage. A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
