Star Trek: 10 Life Lessons You Can Learn From Worf
6. Why Prune Juice Is Important - "Yesterday's Enterprise" (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
We first discover Worf's discovery of this less-than-intoxicating beverage in Ten-Forward in "Yesterday's Enterprise". It's a rare moment when we get to see Worf relax and let his guard down. Not surprisingly, it is the all-knowing Guinan who hedonistically introduces Worf to this new pleasure. Worf's reaction is priceless. As soon as he tastes the drink, he declares it to be a warrior's drink and it becomes a regular favourite. The idea actually came to Ronald D. Moore reading John Ford's THE FINAL REFLECTION. In it, Ford wrote that Klingons were fond of fruit juice. Moore took the idea and extrapolated it to include that wonder-fruit: prunes. Of course, the important thing here is that Worf has discovered a pleasure. In his regimented life of honour, duty and obedience, this is a little bit of freedom or an expression of luxury. Everyone needs something that exclusively belongs to him or her. In this case, Worf finds comfort and some relaxation in a beverage that also has the benefit of un-constipating him. Shouldn't we all?
