Star Trek: 10 Moments That Confirm J/C (Janeway & Chakotay)

The Star Trek: Prodigy two-parter Last Flight of the Protostar is all about shipping, as the named vessel sets sail across seas of vapour in order to return to the stars. In Chakotay's lonely lament for his lost crew through 10 years on Ysida, we can also ship J/C by the absence of the first half of that initialism. The last light left on aboard the Protostar is beaming with symbolism, after all, as Chakotay holds on to the only vestige of the life he believes he can never return to.

It is a triumph, among many, of Prodigy to have brought back Kathryn Janeway in the animated flesh-and-blood and to have introduced us to her holographic counterpart at the same time. Hologram Janeway has always been more than just a stand-in for the real thing, however. She is her own entity, and Chakotay's relationship to, and love for, her (in the platonic sense), and vice-versa, is unique. That Chakotay championed Holo-Janeway's individuality and right to existence is proven in Ouroboros, Part II when he and The Doctor find a way to save her program. "You gave me a second chance. Let me return the favour," as Chakotay said.

Speaking of The Doctor, in Touch of Grey, the undercurrent of flirtatiousness between him and Holo-Janeway — "big fan [of his holonovels]" — was such that a whole new shipping might be forecast. Indeed, in an interview with CinemaBlend's Mick Joest, Robert Picardo confirmed that the flirtation "was [there] in the script".
