Star Trek: 10 Reasons Prodigy Is The Best Series Of The Kurtzman Era

2. The Ship

The USS Protostar NX-76884 is something new, exciting and different but yet retains the classic Starfleet starship lines traceable back to the classic USS Enterprise.

Smaller than most starships we've seen before, its origins and conception are totally unknown. How did it get to the Delta Quadrant? How did The Diviner know it existed?

Where Prodigy has succeeded with the ship is that through the eyes of the new crew the viewer is exploring every inch of her for the first time as well. The Protostar bridge is an Ikea shopper's dream with crystal clean surfaces and that glorious transparent dome opening up with whole deck.

Viewers have seen the crew and Captain's quarters, Main Engineering and the clever 3D print ability that has already provided the ship with shuttles and the six-wheeled Runaway land vehicle. As the show is only a handful of episodes into a 20 story first season it suggests that there are a few more surprises to turn up.

This is a stunning design that links clearly into the Starfleet design spectrum and provides a clear visual link into an enormous back catalogue of space craft that new and younger fans will revel in coming to know.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
