Aside from the Discovery's roots in the obscure, unused Enterprise design from Star Trek: Planet of the Titans, the producers and designers also looked to non-Trek vehicles (both real and fictional) when creating Star Trek: Discovery's titular vessel.

A military aircraft enthusiast, designer John Eaves suggested the producers consider the 1950s prototype United Stated bomber, the XB-70 Valkyrie, as inspiration for the Discovery's configuration. According to Eaves, "We used that as kind of a basis for our design, it has the gooseneck, it has that little 'A' shape in the back."

Other inspirations came from Bryan Fuller himself, who (in addition to looking to Ken Adam and Ralph MacQuarrie's artwork from Planet of the Titans) also wanted incorporate shapes from James Bond's 1970s and 80s era submarine car, Wet Nellie AKA the Lotus Turbo Esprit.
