Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Discovery You Need To Know

7. An Early Version Lives On

Star Trek Discovery
CBS

It was an unusual move for CBS to release a preview trailer featuring an unfinished and (frankly) poorly rendered version of Star Trek: Discovery's main starship a full year before her debut. Despite an enthusiastic reception from fans, the producers and designers still weren't satisfied with that iteration of the vessel and continued to hone her design, ultimately landing on a sleeker version featuring a cut-out saucer section and long, tapered warp nacelles.

However, in a tradition that dates back to the marketing for 1996's Star Trek: First Contact, the version of Discovery that was used to promote Star Trek: Discovery was still not the final starship that appeared on screen.

Marketing materials and merchandising released in the run up to Star Trek: Discovery's premiere featured a nearly finalized version of the USS Discovery, distinguished from the final ship by the placement and scale of her warp nacelles. This not-quite-accurate depiction of the Discovery continues to appear in promotional materials and is prominently featured on Hero Collector's Star Trek: Discovery Starships Collection packaging today.
