Star Trek: 12 Best Alternate Reality Episodes

The closing of the mirror universe arc on Discovery is a thrilling, action packed hour, giving almost all of the crew a chance to shine in some form or another. Jason Isaacs chews every piece of the scenery he can get his teeth into, hamming it up with his best vaudevillian glee.

Georgiou and Burnham team up to take down the megalomaniac, while Saru captains the Discovery on its path to freedom. The finale of the episode, packed so tight with excellent visuals (something Discovery has in spades) and nail biting tension is one of the better season finales, particularly with the stakes so high.

The ISS Charon is a fascinating ship as well, so far removed from anything that had been seen in Star Trek before. While Discovery comes under a fair amount of criticism for its departures from established visual canon, it is undeniable that some of the additions to the franchise in the form of these kinds of ships are beautiful.

The episode stands out from these series of episodes thanks in large part to the writing and acting on show. Burnham finally feels like a character that the audience can root for. Up to this point, her story had felt somewhat forced. Georgiou is dastardly, but in the form of an anti-hero. It is also the first proper example of Saru coming into his own.

While this was not the ending of the first season, this episode was a fantastic cap on a rapidly improving series.
