Star Trek: 12 Characters That Deserve Their Own Series
11. Captain Sulu
Sulu was an interesting character in the original Star Trek (series and films), played by an equally intriguing actor, George Takei. Intriguing enough (at least) that Gene Roddenberry almost let Takei's character be portrayed openly gay in the series.
While Takei himself is much older now, he could easily work with the new cast (from the Abrams films) and possibly portray the current Sulu's, John Cho, father.
Sulu himself is shown throughout some of the Trek films as the active captain of the Excelsior, a ship he captained until he was 113 years of age. Aside from the events that occurred in the original Trek films, there all 96 years with of stories that can be written for Sulu & the voyages of the Excelsior. In fact, there's a few expanded universe books on the Excelsior already available that can provide more source material.
The Excelsior was originally designed to be the fastest ship in the fleet with its (experimental) Transwarp Drive. If only the damned thing would've worked... Excelsior itself was a prototype proceeded the Constitution-Class based Enterprise as the flagship for the Federation. The Excelsior-Class of starship remained in service for the next 100 years. With the extreme length of Sulu's service record, his future interactions with characters like Chakotay, Picard, Sisko, and Spock. A Series on his life and exploits bringing the 22nd and 23rd centuries would be amazing.
