Star Trek: 15 Best Holodeck Moments

12. Booby Trap - Geordi Falls In Love With 'Leah'

Star Trek Leah Brahms
CBS

The original idea here had Picard interacting with Dr. Leah Brahms on the holodeck, while attempting to figure out how to save the Enterprise. However, it was quickly pointed out that it wouldn't make sense to remove Picard from the bridge and, to be fair, he wasn't an engineer either.

Geordi was the natural choice for this episode to centre on. While the events outside the holodeck drive the plot forward, it is his relationship with Brahms, and the Enterprise itself, that is the emotional drive. Michael Pillar recalled that this was a story that was essentially about a man who loves his car. Though he would later meet a very different Leah in Galaxy's Child, this first representation was more obviously attracted by his knowledge. Not for the first time, Geordi would be unlucky in love.

The original set was to have been a disassembled warp drive, but this was updated once the budget was revised. Looking closely, there are models of both pre- and post-refit Constitution class starships on display as well.

It may not have been the most influential episode to focus on the holodeck, but the events herein are referenced several more times in the series. Apart from meeting the real Dr. Brahms later, Geordi apparently marries her in the alternate future experienced by Picard in All Good Things. Picard's question to his officers about whether they played with ships in bottles is also referenced, as he remembers this information about O'Brien from this episode.
