Listed as one of the ten essential episodes of Voyager, this was an example of everyone coming together to simply have a great time. It was slipped into the production schedule when it was, to give the crew an excuse not to use the bridge set for as much as possible, due to a fire on that stage.

An homage and loving tribute to '40s Flash Gordon serials, this drops as many characters as possible into the mix with Captain Proton. Even Tuvok gets to join in the fun, something Tim Russ absolutely loved getting a chance to do. Kate Mulgrew however seemed to have the most fun, donning the robes of Queen Arachnia.

She clearly hams it up to the extreme here, working with glee alongside guest actor Martin Raynor as Chaotica himself. She riffs off him perfectly, even borrowing some of his mannerisms in whipping out the chord of his microphone as she moves.

The music from the episode calls to mind the old B-movies from the '40s and '50s, high whistles and all. The black and white tint, something which had been suggested for and ultimately rejected for the Next Generation's episode The Big Goodbye, works perfectly here. The character was so popular that Chaotica would be brought back for a third and final time, appearing in the seventh season episode Shattered, giving Mulgrew the chance to play Arachnia one last time as well.
